Audacity is a free tool, installed on all College PCs, that allows you to create and edit sound files.  It is easy to record from scratch, but can also take and edit audio files you record on your mobile phone.

Sound files can be used in many learning situations:

  • to provide additional detail about a topic
  • record expert or guest speaker
  • provide feedback for assignment

Mentimeter is very useful to get views from students and present these views in class, perhaps as an aid to discussion.  Students may complete the Mentimeter exercise before, during or after in class.  REsponses can be presented live by the teacher, in various forms, including a word cloud, simple numbers of responses, graphs and many more.

Collate and share weblinks

Peartrees is a tool that allows users to create an online collection of web-based resource links, in graphic form, and allows the collection to be shared with ‘friends’ through social networks.

Accessible via PC or mobile device.  Can be embedded into Moodle, Sharepoint etc.

present me logo What it does: allows you to voiceover for a presentation, using audio, video or both.What is uses: could be a PowerPoint, pdf or Google Doc.

Technology needed: a webcam, mic, headset.

Why use it: it makes a presentation or document more engaging, especially when accessed outside class time.  Also, present.me is very good for adding additional information to an electronic learning resource, using voice and image that is familiar to the student.

A screencast is a video that is created from recording the mouse movements and keystrokes you do on a computer, along with any voice recording you do to narrate your on-screen activities.  The video produced can be used for a number of purposes, including:

  • show how to use some online resource, tool, website
  • provide feedback on an assessment.
